Ukrainian delegation to attend Warsaw NATO summit

A delegation from Ukraine will attend July’s NATO summit in Warsaw, it was revealed on Friday following Polish-Ukrainian talks in the Polish capital.

Today’s talks involved representatives of the presidents of both countries, and Poland hopes that the forthcoming summit will see the consolidation of NATO’s eastern flank, although Ukraine itself is not a member of the organisation.

“Ukraine will be present during the NATO summit in Warsaw and we want that presence to be significant and for the session of the council to be an important guarantee of security and stability in this part of Europe,” said Krzysztof Szczerski, Secretary of State at the Polish president’s chancellery.

Referring to Russia’s backing of separatists in eastern Ukraine, Szczerski said that the country is having to cope with “the aggression of a neighbour that is violating international law.”

Visas

Szczerski likewise said that Ukrainians should be able to enter the EU without the necessity of having a visa.

“Europe cannot close its doors on Ukraine,” he said.

“Ukraine should be included in a visa-free regime as soon as possible,” he argued. (nh/pk)
