Tajikistan closes border with Afghanistan

The Tajik authorities closed one of the checkpoints and blocked traffic on 5 bridges across the Pyanj River on the Tajik-Afghan border.

The administration of Khatlon region said that a large territory from Shamsiddini Shokhin district to Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region was temporarily closed for security reasons.

Governor of Badakhshan province of Afghanistan Ahmad Faisal Bekzod on December 13 confirmed the closure of the border with Tajikistan.

“We are currently holding talks with the Tajik side on opening the border. This is important for residents of the province, because at this time of the year it's almost impossible to get to the central part of Afghanistan due to the heavy snowfall. Usually, we buy food only in Tajikistan in autumn and winter,” the official said.

However, spokesman of the Border Troops of the State National Security Committee of Tajikistan Muhammad Ulugkhodjayev said that there were no any official resolution of the authorities on closing the Tajik-Afghan border.
