Prime Minister in Kiev security forum: 50 years ago we believed that Lithuania was alive and we were right

As part of his official visit to Ukraine, Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis has taken part earlier today in Kiev security forum, where he has underscored the freedom-protection values, saying that he is proud of the Lithuanian people who continue helping Ukraine.

“The national freedom will not put up with compromises with enemies, whether internal or external. I am proud of my country and my people, who knew what to when Ukraine fell into the hands of the aggressor. It was not just words. But actual deeds. And I am sincerely proud that our citizens continue supporting Ukraine until now”, said Saulius Skvernelis in the forum.

The Prime Minister has noted the Ukrainians should never give up on the Crimea.

“They try convincing you that no hopes should be cherished in this regard. But you must continue strong. We know this very well, because for 50 years we believed that Lithuania was alive. And we were right”, said S. Skvernelis.

The Prime Minister has also noted the importance of reforms in Ukraine, as it is Ukraine itself and its people who need them not the EU. The Prime Minister has pointed out the need for changes, which will serve as a prerequisite for the democratic Ukraine to become an integral part of Europe.

Security issues have been discussed with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman, Estonian Prime Minister Jüri Ratas and the Latvian Head of Government Maris Kučinskis.

Established back in 2007, Kiev security forum has been held annually to host high-level discussion on issues of the Black Sea region and wider Europe, including regional conflict resolution, economic and energy security, illegal migration, organized crime, refugees, border management, corruption, terrorism, nuclear and conventional weapons proliferation, human trafficking, etc.
