Polish-US relations a priority for president: official

Relations between Warsaw and Washington are a priority for Poland’s president, an aide to the head of state has said.

Tuesday marks four years since Polish President Andrzej Duda was sworn into office.

Krzysztof Szczerski, chief of staff to the president, said that during his term Duda has “very strongly emphasized forging transatlantic ties both through Polish-US relations as well as through NATO.”

Szczerski added that an important aspect of bilateral relations with the United States was energy cooperation.

Duda’s "effective negotiations resulted in American LNG [liquefied natural gas] becoming an alternative source of energy supplies in Poland,” Szczerski said in an interview with state news agency PAP on Monday.

According to Szczerski, the highlights of Duda’s term include hosting Poland’s first NATO summit in 2016 and signing an agreement with US President Donald Trump in June on stationing 1,000 additional American troops in Poland.
