Bidzina Ivanishvili, the leader of the Georgian Dream coalition and candidate for Georgian prime minister, said Oct. 9 after a meeting with the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili that their views on foreign policy and Georgia’s integration into NATO and EU coincide.
«Our opinions coincide on this matter. Our strategy is the European and NATO integration,» Ivanishvili told journalists, adding that Georgia will definitely become a member of NATO in the future.
Ivanishvili’s meeting with Saakashvili took place as a part of the power transfer process after the Georgian Dream coalition won the Oct. 1 parliamentary elections in Georgia.
Two meetings of the working group, consisting of representatives of the Georgian Dream and the previously-ruling United National Movement, have taken place so far.
Ivanishvili nominated his candidates for the new cabinet of ministers and representatives of the coalition have reportedly begun to observe the working process in various ministries and prepare for a handover.
President Saakashvili told journalists after the Oct. 9 meeting with Ivanishvili that transition of power will be peaceful and free of difficulties.
«For the first time in this region, a peaceful transition of executive power is under way. The Georgian people have made their choice and we say that we respect it,» Saakashvili said in a briefing.

«We have said this before and it is not surprising to anyone that some fundamental differences remain between us on certain political and national issues. However, as a government that has responsibilities and I, as a president, who is the guarantor of the Constitution, will ensure the transfer of power without any incidents,» Saakashvili said.
«For the first time in Georgia’s history, democracy has been preserved, considering the interests of the Georgian people. It is most important that democracy strengthens and there is always a possibility for its development. The Georigan people should have better opportunities. I, as the president, will make sure that the interests of the Georgian people are protected. It will be my driving force in the months and years to come. I hope that we will continue all the processes within the Constitutional framework,» Saakashvili said.
Everyone should concentrate on the future now, despite all the fundamental differences in opinions almost on all issues, according to the president.
