The 5th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention) is under way in Ashgabat. It has been organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and the State Enterprise for the Caspian Sea under the President of Turkmenistan together with the interim Secretariat of the Tehran Convention at the regional office of the UN Environment Programme for Europe (ROE UNEP).
The meeting aims to discuss and agree on the most basic documents to the Tehran Convention in order to ensure a reliable system of environmental protection in the world's largest inland water reservoir such as the Caspian Sea.
The three-day forum is being attended by delegations consisting of managers and specialists of state agencies for environmental protection and natural resources of Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Russia and Turkmenistan, representatives of the United Nations Development Programme, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the European Union and others. A delegation of the Interim Secretariat of Tehran Convention headed by ROE UNEP Director and Regional Representative Jan Dusík also arrived in Ashgabat to attend the forum.
In the course of discussions, the conference participants proceeded to consideration and harmonization of positions on the documents relating to the conservation of biological diversity of the Caspian Sea.
The conference participants stressed that the Caspian region is one of the most important geopolitical and economic centers in the Eurasian space, offering conditions for establishment of coordinated international cooperation based on legal norms, equality and mutual respect of interests of all littoral states.
