Senate Speaker of Kazakhstan Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev has received Regional Director of the Joint United Nations Program on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS) for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Vinay Saldana in Astana today, the chamber's press service reports.
At the meeting, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev expressed hope that Mr. Saldana's recent appointment will help intensify UNAIDS efforts in the region. According to the Kazakh Senate Speaker, the UNAIDS has achieved a lot in terms of diagnostics and prevention of the epidemic worldwide.
Mr. Saldana, in turn, highly appreciated the work done in Kazakhstan to fight AIDS.
"Kazakhstan is expected to become the leader in terms of fight against HIV and AIDS in the Central Asian region and CIS by 2020," he noted.
The Senate Speaker briefed the regional director on the socioeconomic situation in Kazakhstan and in Central Asia as well as the lawmaking activity of the Kazakh Parliament.
Vinay Saldana added that Nursultan Nazarbayev's initiatives on peaceful settlement of the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and his proposal to hold the meeting in Norman format in Astana was welcomed by the international community and the UN.
