President Atambayev suggests Obama not aware of Askarov's award by U.S. State Department, calls award “provocation”

Atambayev speaking The United States of America has made a wrong step regarding Azimzhan Askarov, President Almazbek Atambayev told reporters during a meeting in Cholpon-Ata on July 27.


“Yet, this is not the whole U.S,” he added.


President Obama must have been unaware of that, President Atambayev suggested.


“This is initiative of the Department of State. This is provocation,” President Atambayev declared.


“Kyrgyzstan offered to set up a commission and to reconsider the materials of the case again. There was no a reply. The European Union accepted the offer, arrival of experts is expected,” the President said.


“The agreement renounced by the government of Kyrgyzstan granted privileges to people, who should not have them,” the President said in comments about the agreement regarding cooperation to facilitate the provision of assistance renounced by the Kyrgyz government.


The Kyrgyz government denounced the Agreement between the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic and the Government of the United States of America Regarding Cooperation to Facilitate the Provision of Assistance signed on 19 May 1993 in Washington after Azimzhan Askarov's human rights defender awarding by the U.S. Department of State.
