NATO Secretary General welcomes discussion on strengthening European defence


 NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg met with EU Defence Ministers in Bratislava on Tuesday (27 September 2016) to discuss stronger cooperation between the European Union and NATO, and shared security challenges. He stressed the importance of implementing the Joint NATO-EU Declaration, signed in the margins of the Warsaw Summit, which gives new substance to the partnership between NATO and the EU.

The ongoing war in Ukraine and Russia’s March 2014 annexation of Crimea have changed Europe. Increased Russian military activity is also felt in the Baltic Sea area, although the heightened tension there is a political and military corollary to the conflict in Ukraine, not something emanating from the region itself. In this sense, it is a sideshow—even with the proximity to Russia’s northern capital, Saint Petersburg.
