EU needs to redefine its functions, tasks: Polish PM

The Polish prime minister on Wednesday said that the European Union needed to redefine its functions and tasks, according to a report by the IAR news agency.

Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, Mateusz Morawiecki said that Europe’s future development should be based on three key pillars: far-reaching changes in industry; efforts to build a union of states guided by solidarity and common security goals; and an increased role for nation states and member state parliaments, according to public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency.

Morawiecki told EU lawmakers that "constitutional pluralism" and respect for differences of opinion were the foundations of a united Europe, IAR reported.

He added that Europe was being plagued by a number of crises, the worst of which was a lack of trust in EU policy, the news agency said.

This lack of trust shows that member states want to have a greater say in policy making, Morawiecki argued during a debate on the future of Europe, as cited by IAR.
