Estonian Foreign Minister: EU must improve interconnections with Eastern Partnership nations

The European Union must improve interconnections with countries of the Eastern Partnership, Estonian Foreign Minister Sven Mikser said at a meeting of foreign ministers of Eastern Partnership and Visegrad countries in Warsaw.

"It is in the interest of the European Union to have a stable, safe and prosperous neighborhood. In order to ensure this, we need to develop interconnections between countries of the European Union and the Eastern Partnership primarily in the field of transport, energy and the digital field," Mikser said according to spokespeople for the Estonian Foreign Ministry.

"Improving interconnections will make economic cooperation, trade and contacts between the people more effective and bring the countries of Eastern Partnership closer to us," Mikser said. He said that attention also has to be paid to the possibilities to finance infrastructure projects.

On the subject of improving digital interconnections, Mikser emphasized that developing e-government infrastructure will help to optimize trade and improve public services, while simultaneously increasing the transparency of government.

The minister said that during the upcoming presidency of the EU it will be possible to highlight the policy of Eastern Partnership by means of high-level events, among other things.

"Within the framework of the Estonian presidency, we will be working in order for the outcomes of the Eastern Partnership Summit to be ambitious and motivating for all the participants to further develop Eastern Partnership. It is important that the summit would send a clear message of joint commitment and that we could demonstrate how cooperation benefits our people," Mikser said.

The minister said it is important to maintain the impetus of the eastern partners to reform their state and societies.
