Regional security – common interest of Germany and Baltic States

President Dalia Grybauskaitė met with the President of the Federal Republic of Germany, Joachim Gauck. Taking part in the meeting on the eve of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall were also Latvian President Andris Bērziņš and Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves. The presidents discussed the security situation in the region and ways to counter newly emerging threats.

Ukrainians are still scared, terrorized by the war; for that reason alone, the vote should not be considered valid. Just last week, the self-proclaimed leaders of the Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics used this excuse to discredit Ukraine's internationally accepted parliamentary elections. And yet, these hypocritical separatists have just held their own election - right in the middle of a war zone, Kalashnikovs at the ready and with backing from Moscow.

By the end of October, the authorities in Sukhumi must respond to Moscow’s proposal to sign a new agreement “On Alliance and Integration” between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Abkhazia (abkhaziya.org, October 14). The fact that the draft document was leaked to the public, evoking a negative uproar among both the Abkhazian public and the Georgian government, indicates that the Abkhazian elites—including the new president, Raul Khadzhimba—oppose many of the clauses in the document that turn the separatist “state” into a territory under Moscow’s complete control.

The SCO Dushanbe Summit: Opening from Eurasia to Asia

The 14th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was held between 11 and 12 September 2014 in Dushanbe, the Capital of Tajikistan. Generally the SCO, which is led by China and Russia, organizes annual summits of its members’ heads of state and government, and has continued to draw the attention of the international community. This year the Dushanbe Summit had a higher degree of visibility in the international media due to the issues that were to be discussed and due to the fact that it was held only one week after the NATO Summit in Wales.
