NATO International Military Staff (IMS) and European Union Military Staff (EUMS) representatives convened yesterday at the EU Military Staff Headquarters for their first meeting of 2014, which was co-chaired by the Directors General (DG) of both organisations. The informal staff-to-staff talks are part of the NATO-EU strategic military dialogue, which has been ongoing since 2003.
President Vladimir Putin raised the pressure on Ukraine yesterday (29 January), saying Russia would wait until the neighbouring country formed a new government, before fully implementing a $15 billion (€11 billion) bailout deal that Kyiv urgently needs. Russia also started extra border checks with Ukraine.
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and European Council President Herman Van Rompuy kicked off the second day of the 50th Munich Security Conference. Steinmeier picked up the notion of the first day and urged Germany to make more specific security policy commitments.
